IHOP Express was created as a fast-casual evolution of the traditional IHOP dining experience, bringing the familiarity of the iconic brand into a quicker, more energetic format. In partnership with BrandCory, we developed the full brand experience for the San Diego Gaslamp District concept—reimagining IHOP for a modern, on-the-go audience while maintaining the equity of the masterbrand.

Challenge
IHOP needed a fast-casual concept that could feel younger, quicker, and more playful while still retaining the familiarity and trust of the core IHOP brand.Problem
The traditional IHOP experience was widely recognized, but the Express format needed its own identity and personality to compete in the fast-casual category without feeling disconnected from the parent brand.Approach
Our strategy was inspired by classic Americana food culture and the indulgent spirit of state fairs—embracing the idea that breakfast is essentially dessert and should be fun, craveable, and enjoyed all day long. We wanted the experience to capture the excitement and nostalgia surrounding comfort food while giving it fresh energy for a fast-casual audience.Solution
To bring that idea to life, we created a full brand identity and environmental system inspired by mid-century design—the era that gave rise to the classic American breakfast experience. Bold graphics, witty messaging, vibrant color, and pop-art-inspired food photography created a visual language that felt nostalgic yet modern. The interior artwork drew inspiration from the pop-art movement of the 1950s and 60s, embracing the idea of transforming everyday objects into oversized works of art. Familiar breakfast items became expressive, larger-than-life graphic moments throughout the space, reinforcing the playful personality of the brand.The system extended across signage, menus, packaging, uniforms, merchandise, collateral, and the restaurant environment—creating a recognizable yet completely reimagined IHOP experience.
